How to find a "right" fit book
To find the best book for your child, have him or her read one page out of the book.
If 5 or fewer words are missed on one page, that book is a good fit for them.
Reading levels are a guide to help your child find a good book.
If a book's reading level is 3.1, that means that an "average" child in 3rd grade of the first month should be able to read it. It is simply a guide, to help you and your child find more books on his or her "reading level". Many students are above as well as below their grade level. Each child progresses on their own timeline, not on a number suggested by a company. Renaissance Learning is the company that determines the reading level. It is formula based on the number of words, the number of pages in the book and the complexity level of words in a book. I tell students often, authors do not write based on a certain reading level. They write about what they are passionate and if a child has that same passion they can usually read the book even though it might be more challenging for them.
All tests are taken at school.
See your child's teacher for questions you may have about earning points and goals.
